I loved this story, its quite dynamic with interesting twists of the plot. My favourite character is without doubt the Dark Horse.

Also I was quite intrigued by Shade, but as far as I write this review after reading a couple of books of Dragonrealm, now Shade is a much more tragic character for me, and his fate is perhaps the only thing in Dragonrealm that I'll never be able to forgive our author here Mar 26, Ward G rated it liked it Shelves: Nice opening outing, for the series.

Has a lot of plot threads working. Many characters as well as races begin being introduced. Good, evil, and some characters fitting somewhere in between.

Main plot points tied up. While leaving plenty of room, for more to come. Oct 07, Harmony T. Unfortunately, this book has been abandoned.

Jan 30, Scott Brewster rated it it was amazing. Oct 17, Eric rated it did not like it. Firedrake is written in an extremely boring style with no substance to its story, world, or characters.

What's worse, the most memorable thing about the book was some incredibly awkward and uncomfortable scenes straying into inappropriate adult territory.

If you're looking for mindless hack and slash fantasy, you're better off going elsewhere. Mar 20, Cate rated it really liked it Shelves: This was the debut novel from an Author who has now evolved into, what some may call a wizard in the arena of creating fantastical worlds and their inhabitants.

He is well known amongst the World of Warcraft community for his penmanship of some of their lore novels and, it was through this medium, that I became aware of him.

I decided to read this as I was intrigued to see how his love for writing fantasy not only began, but how it had progressed over time.

The main protagonist in this book is a This was the debut novel from an Author who has now evolved into, what some may call a wizard in the arena of creating fantastical worlds and their inhabitants.

The main protagonist in this book is a young man who is full of the arrogance of his youth, but there is also an underlying current of uncertainty in things he does that make him instantly likeable to the reader.

He is of an age where he is easily smitten by a pretty face, and it made me smile to see how quickly this happened to him as it seems that the Author had perfectly captured this part of all our lives; the growing up and discovering the opposite sex.

As the title suggests there are dragons in this novel, and they also were given subject to some very interesting development, but some of them lacked the explanation of their motivation behind the things they wanted to do.

The storyline itself is very well written and is able to throw a few surprising plot twists and turns at a reader who may think they know what is coming next.

Showing the skill that would later make him a great loremaster, this Author weaves dragon lore into his story with ease, and adds his own twist on the lore which results in it being expanded even more.

However, if you are looking for a fantasy novel that is full of brilliant prose you may be disappointed with this book; at times the language became rather dull but this in no way detracted from the overall enjoyment that reading this book would bring.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this Authors later works, but they need to remember when reading it that is was his first book and try to lay aside any comparisons they may want to make.

I will definitely be reading the remaining Dragonrealm books. Sep 26, Zachary Taylor rated it really liked it Shelves: I think that this is a fun little read.

It was pretty self contained and not overly lengthy. It builds a rather beautiful world that you beg the author to explore. There are a few cheesy things that can be expected from the author's experience at the time.

The time period was likely also a factor in this. Thankfully the book doesn't drag too much and largely focuses on the action to help counteract these.

I read this as part of a collection of the first three books. Looking forward to Ice Dragon I think that this is a fun little read. Looking forward to Ice Dragon.

Jan 29, Lee Dunning rated it it was ok. Ow, I think I need to leave off of reading fantasy and horror from the 80's and probably the 90's.

Richard Knaak has written several dozen books, and according to the blurb on the back of "Firedrake" at least 36 of them have made the New York Times bestseller list.

That may well be true, but Firedrake, if written today, would not find an agent, no less an editor willing to publish it. Lets start with the head popping.

Nowadays you're allowed to switch POV but it's expected that within a single sc Ow, I think I need to leave off of reading fantasy and horror from the 80's and probably the 90's.

Nowadays you're allowed to switch POV but it's expected that within a single scene you don't switch from person to person. Knaak consistently jumps from head to head as the mood takes him, sometimes changing character POV within a single paragraph.

On page 99 of the edition I read, within the space of two paragraphs he goes from Cabe in one paragraph to Lady Gwen in the next, and within one sentence switches to Blane.

Then there's the exclamation marks. I randomly stopped to count them a couple of times. One page had 12 and another had Even basic sentences got this treatment, I assume to make ordinary scenes come across as exciting.

Another no-no is the constant use of modifiers. With almost-evident relief, Melicard excused himself. People constantly almost, nearly, mostly, etc.

Perhaps they feared commitment. The worst sin is the fact the main character, Cabe, just sort of has things happen to him. He gets pulled along by events without outwitting or outfighting anything on his own.

He accomplishes nothing through hard work or sacrifice. He's just a prop. The bad guys are afraid of him, but Cabe himself never does anything to earn that fear.

He throws up his arms to avoid a blow and the villain drops dead. Oh, we find out later, but it has nothing to do with Cabe doing anything worthy of the label hero.

I gave the book one star more than you might expect for a couple of reasons. One, it provided an excellent tutorial of what not to do as a modern writer.

Two, I finished it. If it wasn't enough of a train wreck to simply toss in the bin unfinished, then I feel obligated to bestow a charity star upon it.

Jul 09, Nia Dragin rated it liked it. As a longtime fan of Richard A. Knaak, I have to say, this novel was a bit of a disappointment.

Knaak has a knack with words and description, but at times, the dialogue within the novel was too much. There were times even when the dialogue was a bit painful and dull.

Other times however it was fun, snarky and enjoyable, but the way the novel move http: Other times however it was fun, snarky and enjoyable, but the way the novel moved and my familiarity with this novelist previous work left me personally wanting more and expecting more.

Knaak is great with characterization overall but there was so much in the novel that lacked something. There was too much in this world, at times it felt like a jumbled mess.

Scene specifics were missing and they were desperately needed in order to follow the characters and the reluctant and confused hero, Cabe Bedlam, on his journey to save the Dragonrealm.

Despite the bumps in the rode, Cabe was fun character and the narrative around his character was very well done. He has no idea what is going on and why everything involves him, but when push comes to shove, he rises to new heights and lives up to his heritage as a mage.

Now, his character was very well done, he was easy to relate to and envision him and the Darkhorse who was also an amazing character.

Darkhorse had the best lines even if his description was difficult to envision. It was a hard to grasp novel because some details that could have helped attach the reader were lost, especially in regards to travel, despite the fact that there is a map in the novel.

So logistics were iffy in Firedrake as well. Apr 09, Meels rated it liked it Shelves: I liked it better than I thought I was going to by the halfway point.

But, the character development is slow and Maybe I'm just weird like that. Also, the story jumps around a lot.

As a resu I liked it better than I thought I was going to by the halfway point. As a result there is a disjointed feel. If you've read any of the Game of Thrones books you'll remember how the author jumps each chapter to different groups of people in different places, yes?

Well, this book does it whenever it likes, randomly. One paragraph you're here and the next you're there. You might even come back, or go somewhere else entirely before that chapter ends.

The author is also way overly fond of his exclamation marks. When folks are talking, I guess they're yelling maybe? Or everything they say is SO emphatic?

It comes off as weird. Lastly, in the gripe department, this author is guilty of my 1 pet peeve: Repeated words and phrases.

Certainly in the same paragraph, but even in the same sentence. It just sets my teeth on edge. Of course this usually pulls me out of the story, but the story was so disjointed that the author was doing that to me most of the time anyway.

So, why three stars? Well, it might be two and a half leaning toward three. But, by the end I was relatively interested.

I didn't hate it. And, I was attached to some characters. The Gryphon, Shade, Dark Horse. I am interested in seeing what happens to Shade and if the Green Dragon ends up being nice.

I might read on Jul 24, Kiersten added it. This book was a pleasant surprise. The worldbuilding is very well-done; I think the idea of the dragon empires is really creative.

The character dynamics, especially between the dragon kings as well as anywhere involving the lesser dragonkind, is really interesting; more complex than it seems on the surface level, I think.

The balance of power is always shifting; the whole story is a web of intrigue because the reader never absolutely knows who's responsible for what and who' Really interesting.

The balance of power is always shifting; the whole story is a web of intrigue because the reader never absolutely knows who's responsible for what and who's holding the reins most of the time.

The dialogue was, I thought, unusual for a fantasy epic. It was a somewhat crazy take on a mix between the typical slightly formal-and-archaic fantasy-speak and modern casualness.

That stood out to me more almost than anything right away - it was almost distracting at times, but also compelling; it distinguished the author for me.

This book was completely unpredictable in places where I thought predictability was almost inevitable by now. Knaak manages, throughout the book, to foreshadow and create suspense without actually giving anything away too soon.

He also doesn't over-dramatize the big twists, which is refreshing, although it pulled me out of the story a bit.

Overall I found the characters unique and enjoyable, and I think the scope of the word is quite impressive. My only real complaint is that it was quite a bit shorter than I was expecting A great book that reminds me why I'm fascinated by epic fantasy.

Aug 12, DeCarabas rated it liked it. The Dragon Kings have ruled over the realm for as long as any can remember.

In the past Dragon Masters, powerful sorcerers, fought to free mankind from the Kings tyrannical rule. The strongest and last of the Masters, Nathan Bedlam, was brought down while slaying one of the Kings.

Years have passed and the fiery, shape-sifting beings are at it again. It is up to Cabe Bedlam, the unknowing grandson of Nathan, to join the fight and save the realm.

That's if he can learn his powers and stay alive f The Dragon Kings have ruled over the realm for as long as any can remember.

That's if he can learn his powers and stay alive first. Firedrake is a straight forward story. There are no plot twists, the characters aren't very complex and many fantasy tropes are used.

The world building was creative - I liked the varied levels of dragon society. A couple of the non-human characters were a lot of fun to read.

I wish we'd seen more of them.

Three German light cruisers and a destroyer sunk against no Royal Navy losses. By 14 December the Admiralty had advance warning of the intended raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby through signals intelligence.

Commodore Keyes was ordered to send eight submarines and his two command destroyers, Lurcher and Firedrake , to take stations off the island of Terschelling to catch the German ships should they turn west into the English Channel.

On 16 December, as the situation developed, the submarines were ordered to move to the Heligoland Bight in order to intercept returning German ships.

As a last-ditch attempt to catch Hipper , the Admiralty ordered Keyes to take his two destroyers and attempt to torpedo Hipper as he returned home around 2 am.

Keyes himself had considered this and wanted to try, but the message was delayed and failed to reach him until too late. On 7 January both Firedrake and Lurcher carried out a search for the missing British submarine C31 , to little avail; it transpired later that she had been mined off the Belgian coast on 4 January.

UC-5 was towed to Harwich and placed in a dry dock , where she was examined and reconditioned. Firedrake survived the war and was sold to J Smith for breaking on 10 October From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
